For me, the key to effective backups is having a drive that I can use easily and quickly. I can plug this into my MacBook Pro and click go on Time Machine, and it's off and running right away. Incremental weekly backups (~1-2GB) take around 15-20 minutes. The initial backup took much longer, of course. This drive is not ready, straight out of the box, to work well with Time Machine. After watching the initial backup crawl along for several days, the backup failed. I used Disk Utility to repair the drive, but the backup continued to fail. I then erased the drive, reformatted (extended/journaled), and Time Machine backed up within 3 hours. Seems to be working fine at this time. Format the drive before you begin any backup and everything will work as it should. My rating would be higher, perhaps 4 Stars, if the hype and sales pitch were presented responsibly.
